The second study18 found that prenatal exposure to the passage of a restrictive immigration law in Arizona coincided with lower birth weight among children born to Latina immigrant women but not among children born to US-born white, black, or Latina women.
The inauguration and subsequent passage of immigration-related Executive Orders in January 2017, for example, may have stressed Latina women as much as or more than the election. If so, the critical periods suggested by the February and July peaks would correspond to the late third trimester and middle first trimester, respectively.

However, in Northern Virginia and Atlanta a higher percentage of Latina women complete 5+ years of college than Latino men do. Latina immigrants also lack a “substantial amount” of English proficiency, as discovered in IWPR’s 2008 research. More educational attainment and access to better quality education would certainly help to improve the Latinas’ chances to move up the job ladder and get better paid jobs. Hispanic/Latina women are more likely to seek care for breast cancer in an emergency situation, once advanced-stage breast cancer begins to cause pain. At this stage, the disease is usually less treatable and usually has a worse prognosis. While this doesn’t completely explain the increase in breast cancer rates when women of this ethnic background move to the United States, different genetic tendencies could provide some information about why the disease is different in women of Hispanic/Latino background.
Disaggregating the white male premium and the Hispanic woman penalty for various subgroups of Hispanic women can help paint a fuller picture of wage gaps for Hispanic workers based on country of origin, immigration history, and education. This methodological approach demonstrates how white men and Hispanic women of different countries of origin are respectively advantaged and disadvantaged compared to other workers in the economy, while also facilitating a direct wage comparison between the two groups.
